High Definition Portal to Ancient times

From next week Wednesday, visitors can dive into the world of Celts and Romans at Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg. The HD Discovery Station lets them explore the region as it would have looked more than 2,000 years ago.

Ever wondered what your neighbourhood looked like centuries before our time? Not only locals but all those fascinated by history can soon take a stroll through the Neckar delta how the Celts or Romans knew it. The new HD Discovery Station opens a window to these long-gone worlds with a 100 km² playable area and 25.000 km² of terrain data waiting to be explored.

A panoramic set-up of four HD screens and two control panels invite visitors to team up and dive into the digital recreation of the Celtic or Roman landscape. Navigating with joysticks, they „fly“ through what we today know as the metropolitan area between Heidelberg, Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. They visit the exact archeological sites where the artefacts exhibited in the museum were found and gain access to detailed background information and media.

In close collaboration with the experts at Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg, we developed an interactive installation that is playful and accessible for all visitors. At the same time, we’re meeting high scientific standards with a 3D environment based on precise location data and historical facts. With a lot of dedication and attention to detail, we were able to bring these Ancient times to life and wrap them in a bold and low-barrier UX design.
